CASTLE ROCK --- Tina Keele's Quilt Nest has been operating from a small, cozy shop about the size of a roomy walk-in closet at 4 Cowlitz St. W.
Four years later, the size of Keele's office at the Nest's new location is about the size of her entire former site.
Keele, 45, is opening today at the corner of 105 Cowlitz St. W and First Avenue Southwest, formerly occupied by the Flower Cellar.
"It's a prime location," she said, adding, "I grabbed it as soon as I could."
"Pretty, pretty, pretty," Keele said she kept saying over the last six weeks of preparation. It almost became a mantra for improving the space and, well, "now look at me --- I'm a mess."
A spacious sewing area off the fabric showroom is almost ready for use.
"This is what a lot of women are waiting for," Keele said Monday after putting a coat of paint on two long sewing tables. The new space will accommodate people who want to sew on their own projects as well as learning more in quilting classes. Keele sees it as a possible gathering place where women can visit while they work on handcrafts.
"I think it is something we really want around here," she said.
Her husband, Randy, 48, a self-employed drywaller, improved the ceilings and walls, all of which are freshly painted.
His operation will benefit from a large room at the back of the Quilt Nest, which will store Sheetrock and related supplies.
Instead of traveling to Silver Lake, where the Keele family lives, his workers will find it easier to pick up what they need, Tina Keele said.
The Quilt Nest may be reached at 274-4663. It is open 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday.
