The city of Longview has proclaimed March 9-11 as "Dana Brown Remembrance Week," Mayor Dennis Weber announced at Thursday's council meeting.
The long-time R.A. Long High School drama teacher and Mainstage Theatre director at R.A. Long High School died of cancer March 1 at the age of 61. In Brown's memory, Weber requested that flags be flown at half-staff and that all patrons of the arts "leave a light on." Brown's memorial service is 3 p.m. Sunday at Longview Community Church.
Weber's flag request is unusual --- according to Federal Flag Code, only the President and state governors have the right to order the flag at half-mast and that's upon the death of a national or state figure.
Friday, Weber said he knew that, which is why he worded it as a request and not an order.
