Reading the 7 Seas -- Hop aboard for free fun all over town

The 2007 Celebration of Literacy presented by Altrusa International of Longview and Kelso starts today with the pirate band Boggs and Salty and continues all week long with activities that celebrate reading and language. All events are family friendly and free, unless information includes a fee.
This year's theme is "Reading the 7 Seas," and will include programs at Kelso and Longview schools and Lower Columbia College's Head Start and home and family life programs. Sponsors include the college, Kelso and Longview schools, Cowlitz Historical Museum, Borders Express, Wal-Mart, Columbia Bank, Coldwell Banker Flaskerud, Paperbacks Galore, Foresters, Reprographics, Kelso Friends of Library, Red Rooster Bakery and Longview Library Foundation.
Sunday, Feb. 25
Come to a Pirate Party, Mateys!
Captain Boggs and Salty, a rowdy, hilarious and word-witty pirate band will perform for families and children of all ages at 3 p.m., the centerpiece of a party that goes from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Student Center with crafts, treasures, free cake and free books.
Monday, Feb. 26
Author! Author!
Jim Lynch, author of "The Highest Tide," will present a writers workshop from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at LCC, Main 119 (building that faces Maple behind the Public Library). Lynch also will meet the public at a Northwest Voices presentation at 7 p.m. at the Longview Public Library. "The Highest Tide," a best-selling coming-of-age novel for teens and adults, won the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award. Both events free.
Tuesday, Feb. 27
• Poems from Around the World
International Poetry Night features learners and tutors from Project READ presenting poems in their native languages at 6:30 p.m at the Longview Public Library.
Cultures represented will be China, Vietnam, Mexico, Cambodia, Korea, Peru, Japan, Poland, and the United States. Descriptions of the poems in English, free international desserts and a book giveaway.

Wednesday, Feb. 28
• Pirate film for families, 6 p.m. Kelso Public Library
Thursday, March 1
• Pirate Crafts and Stories, 10 a.m., Kelso Public Library.
• The Pirates Are Coming! Family stories and crafts at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the Longview Public Library.
• Spellbinding stories by the Storytellers Network for all ages, 6-8 p.m. at Borders Books at the Three Rivers Mall.
• Saturday, March 3
Family story time in English and Spanish, 2 p.m. at the Longview Public Library
