Cowlitz AmeriCorps recently took part in the annual Martin Luther King "A Day On, Not a Day Off" service project by helping local seniors at four locations.

Longview Senior Center president Art Daily provided AmeriCorps volunteers with a wish list of services and needs. Barbie Morrison of the Longview Parks and Recreation Department, and Jana Dahlman, secretary/hostess of the senior center, added to the list.

With help from community members Jack Eby and Herb Pecha, AmeriCorps members completed more than 60 hours of service for the senior center. Volunteers made table decorations and posters for the center and AmeriCorps members Yvonne Pecha, Barbara Skreen, Cyndy Haag, Ruby Ordinola and Diana Schoonover took apart and cleaned the center's kitchen fan, washed all the windows and glass doors, scrubbed and disinfected tables, cleaned kitchen cabinet exteriors, organized the under-sink storage, polished appliances, dusted and organized shelves and cleaned and organized the game area.

The group concluded their efforts for the senior center by presenting the center with a raffle tumbler and case of playing cards, donated by Cleopatra's Wild Grizzly Casino and employee Christine Pennington, during the center's Jan. 19 board meeting.

The Cowlitz AmeriCorps Network includes 24 federally funded community volunteers committed to 11 months of service. It is administered locally through the United Way of Cowlitz County and Residential Resources.
