Lacy Osterman, of Rainier, the 2006 Columbia County Fair and Rodeo Queen, recently competed for and won the title of 2007 Salem Rodeo Queen.
In addition to the Salem title, Osterman, 19, won the speech competition award in the pageant. Her reign begins today, taking over for Caylee Cooper of Warren, Ore., the 2006 Salem Queen. The candidates were judged on horsemanship, personality, rodeo knowledge, appearance and speaking ability.
"I was surprised and excited that I won," Osterman said Sunday. "It was all I could do not to cry."
The competition was held Nov. 5.
"Caylee (Cooper) was the 2004 Columbia County Queen, so it was nice that she was able to pass along her crown to another Columbia County Queen," said Jean McPherson, president of the Miss Rodeo Oregon Pageant, Inc.
As the Salem Queen, Osterman will appear in parades and at rodeos and coronations and will visit schools and Boys and Girls Clubs to promote rodeos and horsemanship.
"I love going to rodeos and working with horses," Osterman said. "I just want to keep doing stuff with horses for the rest of my life."
Osterman is the daughter of Clifford "Skip" and Melody Osterman of Rainier. She graduated from Rainier High School in 2005, where she was a member of the High School Equestrian Team and Oregon Student Safety on the Move (OSSOM).
Osterman was active in Columbia County Horse 4-H for nine years, qualifying for and winning medallions at state competitions in performance, gaming, horse bowl and horse judging. Her rodeo partner is Danny, a 9-year-old Arabian/Appaloosa gelding.
She plans to attend Linn-Benton Community College in Albany, Ore., to major in equine management, with the goal of becoming a professional horse trainer.
