More than 250 volunteers from 26 area businesses will show they care Wednesday.

The Cowlitz County United Way will kick off for the 2007 campaign with the annual United Way Day of Caring.

Volunteers are spending one day to help in their choice of 18 different projects.

"People from local agencies submit projects that need to be done," said Kathy Chappelle, organizer of the Day of Caring.

Chappelle said she was sending volunteers to locations including the Community House, the Emergency Support Shelter, the Girl Scout Camp, the Humane Society, Meals on Wheels, the Red Hat Thrift Store, Progress Center, five Residential Resource homes, the Reading is Fundamental Program at Wallace Elementary School, the St. James Center in Cathlamet and The Salvation Army.

"Two hundred and fifty volunteers can get a lot done in one day," she said.

As an example, some of the volunteers at The Salvation Army will be serving lunch while others work on outside cleaning and landscaping.

Volunteers will be clearing trails and cutting firewood at the Girl Scout Camp, sorting clothes at the Red Hat Thrift Shop and painting at Community House on Broadway.

All the volunteers will be meeting at 8 a.m. at the Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers building on 15th Avenue.

"Our director, Bob Johnson, will get everyone pumped up, the volunteers will meet up with the agency coordinators, and they'll all take off from there," Chappelle said.

According to Johnson, the Cowlitz County United Way raised and distributed more than $600,000 to local nonprofit groups in 2006.
