Jing Fang, the Castle Rock restaurant owner whose wife was killed by an alleged drunk wrong-way driver in Portland, is out of the hospital and on the mend.

Fang's wife, Su, was killed in the Feb. 13 crash on Interstate 205. The couple, who immigrated from China in the mid-1980s, owned and operated Castle Rock's Happy Restaurant since 2000 and commuted each day from Portland. They were driving home when the crash occurred.

The restaurant has been closed since the accident.

Fang, 54, was critically injured in the crash and spent more than a week in the hospital. He's using crutches to get around and faces several months of physical therapy and recovery, said Janie Larsen, who managed the lounge and later the pull tabs portion of the restaurant.

"He's tough, he's always been tough, so he's getting through this," Larsen said.

The family discussed selling the restaurant because Fang isn't available to cook, but they also may reopen it, Larsen said. Right now, they're focused on Su Fang's funeral, which they hope to hold in mid-March once her sisters arrive from China.

Friends and former employees talked of holding a memorial fund-raiser to help the family with expenses, but the Fangs have declined, Larsen said.

Portland Police arrested Vladimir Shintar on Feb. 23, upon the 31-year-old Vancouver residents' release from Legacy Emanuel Hospital. He was charged with manslaughter, driving under the influence of intoxicants, assault and reckless driving.

The public gets a chance to list the qualifications it wants for a new Clatskanie school superintendent in a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Superintendent Mike Corley is resigning June 30, and the school board has hired the Oregon School Board Association to conduct the search. Betsy Miller Jones of the OSBA will be running Thursday's public meeting, which is required by law.

Once the list is approved by the board, which could happen March 27 meeting, OSBA will advertise for the position based on those qualifications.

"I like it when we use the community as much as possible," Jones told the board. "It becomes a positive thing for the community, and it is better for the new superintendent."

Jones said the board can hire a interim superintendent while the search continues.

At the Feb. 27 school board meeting, board member Karen George raised the possibility that the district could hire a combination superintendent and school administrator.

In that case, Jones said, OSBA could go ahead and start on the qualifications, but the decision regarding the position needs to be made before advertising. She recommended that board make that decision by March 27, or consider hiring an interim.

"That's a big decision," Jones said. "And one the board needs to make as soon as possible."

The meeting will be held in the Community Education Center at 555 SW Bryant Street in Clatskanie.
