The annual poetry contest for adults sponsored by The Daily News is now accepting entries. All poems are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at the newspaper office. Anyone 18 or older who lives in The Daily News circulation area may enter the contest.
All winning poems will be announced with publication in November, and a public poetry reading will be held in November. At that time, winning poets will read, and poems entered in the Slam portion will be judged.
Rules will be printed regularly on the feature pages until the deadline and posted on The Daily News Web site.
Any poem that does not follow the guidelines will be disqualified.
• Each entrant may submit one or two poems in any style.
• Poems may be entered in one of three categories: Poetry Slam (poems that must compete in performance, with poets reading them in a performance style), Inspirational (poems with a spiritual theme), or Open (all other poems). Please identify which category your poem fits.
• Poems must be no more than 25 lines, original, unpublished and must not previously have won an award or prize.
• Poems must be submitted in duplicate -- one copy for the judge and one for The Daily News.
• Each entrant must submit a statement that the poem is his or her own work.
• On a separate card or on the back of one copy, write your name, address, daytime telephone number and the title or first line of each entry. Do not put your name on the poem.
• Poems will not be returned. Please keep a copy for yourself.
• Address mailed entries to: Poetry Contest, This Day Editor, The Daily News, P.O. Box 189, Longview 98632.
• To enter by e-mail, please format your poem the way it should appear, and include name, address and daytime phone number as well as an author's note stating that the poem is completely your work. Send poems to zimmerman@tdn.com.
