RAL boys golf loses to C. River on tiebreaker

R.A. Long and Columbia River battled to a 154-154 tie Wednesday in a Greater St. Helens 3A league boys golf match at Mint Valley Golf Course.

The teams split medalist honors as well, with RAL's Danny Axon and River's Taylor Franklin both turning in even-par 35s.

Chris Holway (39), Justin Ayres (39) and Carl Ostergren (41) rounded out RAL's top four. Columbia River won a tiebreaker draw, so the match will be treated as an RAL loss in the GSHL standings.

Monarchs handle Bay

VANCOUVER ---- Mark Morris defeated Hudson's Bay 154-169 in a GSHL 3A dual match at Green Meadows Golf Course, improving the Monarchs' overall record to 4-1.

Ian Dahl claimed the medal with a 36, and Greg Kirkpatrick and Shane Kjallin contributed 39s, while Justin Knutsen and Ryan Morkert both shot 40.

"It was a good test for our kids after the loss against Camas," MM coach Dave Polk said.

Kelso falls to Camas

Marc Sundem, Camas' fifth and final varsity golfer, shot a medalist round of even-par 36 to lead Camas past Kelso 155-160 in a Greater St. Helens 3A League dual match Wednesday at Three Rivers Golf Course.

The Hilanders were led by Bryce Jackson with a 37 and Erik Peterson at 38. Matt Moody (40) and Ryan Ruhland (45) rounded out the scorecard for Kelso (2-2-1 league).

CC VOLLEYBALL

Lower Columbia tuned up on a struggling Tacoma squad, turning them away with a 30-20, 30-18, 30-22 performance.

"It was a good match for us to build some confidence," LCC coach Jocelyn Price said.

Ashley Willman had 10 kills for a .412 hitting percentage, but LCC's most efficient attacker was its setter, Kayli Anderson, who was .583 for eight kills in addition to her 32 assists.

Brenda Riggs (eight kills, four ace serves), Kassondra Farrar (five kills, five aces, three blocks), and Mandy Wallace (two kills, six digs) also played well for the Red Devils.

LCC, now 4-0 in league, leaves today for the Spokane Cross-Over Tournament, where their first opponent will be Spokane at 3:00 Friday, with play continuing into Saturday.

CROSS COUNTRY

Kalama takes first place

WOODLAND ---- Montesano standout Jared Moe whipped his competition by nearly a minute in a five-team cross country meet here Wednesday, winning the boys half of the event in 17 minutes, 26 seconds.

But Kalama, led by runner-up Aaron Storedahl (18:17), captured the team crown with 26 points. Montesano was second with 36, and Woodland, Hockinson and Naselle ran incomplete.

D.J. Younce (sixth, 19:37), Mitchell Bishop (eighth, 20:04) and Cole Brown (10th, 20:35) also finished in the top 10 for the Chinooks, and Marc Loveall was 11th (20:40).

Naselle was led by Evan Hendrickson in third place (19:15). Ryan Nortrup (24th, 23:14), Spencer Griss (26th, 23:40) and Garrick Bennett (25:32) rounded out the Comets' effort.

Eric Keto (seventh, 19:42), Larry Simonson (14th, 20:48), Marcus Watts (25th, 23:14) and Scott Friedrichsen (28th, 24:05) ran for Woodland.

On the girls side, all four teams ran incomplete. Erin Saari was third for Naselle (25:55), Narci Carlson was sixth (28:16) and Kristina Chism was seventh (28:27). Woodland's lone runner was Jinah Smith in ninth (31:14).

SWIMMING

VANCOUVER ---- Columbia River sank Kelso 115-55, although Kelso's Maya Dill and Toutle Lake's Kinsey Laine dominated their individual events.

Dill won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 22.31 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 1:07.10, and Laine, one of three TL swimmers there, was the meet's fastest in the 50 free (27.59) and the 100 backstroke (1:09.31, a personal best).

"For someone who swims year-round to get a best time in the middle of the season, she;s been working pretty hard," Kelso/TL coach Laurie Metzger said.

Kelso's Devin Hamm won the 500 free in 5:48.63, and freshman Aylah Gebhardt, in her first try at the event, barely missed qualifying for districts. In the 200 free, Kelso's Jaimie Bowen had an outstanding swiim.

At 4:00 Tuesday, Kelso and Toutle Lake take on Camas and Prairie at Gaither Pool.

R.A. Long 173, Columbia River 209 -- CR's Lucas Wisener (41) took the medal, but R.A. Long's Jesse Edmonds (42) was right on his heels.

C-squad report

Camas 183, Kelso 196 -- Kelso's Ritchie Lee and Dwight Price shared the medal with matching 47s.

R.A. Long 181, Columbia River 205 -- Glen Handley shot a 42 at Mint Valley Golf Course to take the medal for RAL. In a second match, R.A. Long beat River 197-237, and Lumberjack Zach Wika was the top individual with a 46.
