TOLEDO ---- Aaron Colby's two-run double keyed Wahkiakum's four-run rally in the seventh inning as the Mules tuned up for Tuesday's big showdown against Kalama with an 8-6 victory over Toledo in a Southwest Washington 1A League Southern Division baseball game Friday.
Colby's smash made a winner out of relief pitcher Randy Hoven, who tossed the final two innings. Matt Mogush pitched the first five frames for the Mules (11-3, 8-2 league).
Wahkiakum trailed 6-4 after Toledo plated three runs in the sixth, but came through in the seventh to remain in second place in the division, 1 1/2 games behind Kalama (9-0 league). The Chinooks visit the Mules on Tuesday.
Hoven had a two-run double in the fifth for Wahkiakum and added a single. Steve Henifin had three hits, David McNally had two hits and two RBIs, and Colby chipped in a single to go with his clutch double.
Gwynne 'cuffs Tigers
NAPAVINE ---- Spencer Gwynne continued to handcuff the rest of the Southwest Washington 1A League Southern Division on Friday, tossing a one-hitter and whiffing 10 to lead Kalama to a 10-0 whitewashing of Napavine.
"Dominant, dominant, dominant," Kalama coach Dave Orzel said of Gwynne, who walked just one. "He was in complete control, from start to finish."
The division-leading 'Nooks (12-2, 9-0 league) got two singles, two doubles and three RBIs from Broc Harkleroad, and Scott Presseisen was 3-for-4 with a double. Bo Storedahl hit a home run, a double and knocked in three runs, and Chris White tripled.
"Our whole defense was outstanding. Everyone contributed. There was great communication between the guys," Orzel added.
Tigers sweep twinbill
CLATSKANIE ---- Sophomore pitcher Kyle Sloderbeck struck out six and helped his cause with two hits and four runs scored as Clatskanie whipped De La Salle 14-4 in the first game of a Northwest 2A League doubleheader Friday.
The Tigers completed the sweep with a 12-1 win in the second game. Both games went five innings. The wins set up a big twinbill showdown Tuesday at second-ranked Warrenton, which leads the NWL with a 10-0 mark.
"He (Sloderbeck) did what we asked him to do," Clatskanie coach Kevin Moffat said. "He threw strikes and kept them off-balance. He's got a good little curve."
Two of the Knights' runs were unearned.
Miles Johnson (2-for-3, two RBIs), Brian Witt (2-for-4, two RBIs), Sean Doyle (two RBIs) and Brandon Mollenhour (two hits) also hit well for the Tigers (16-4, 9-1 league).

BOYS SOCCER
River punches Jacks
R.A. Long saw its playoff hopes dashed for good Friday night in a 4-1 loss to Columbia River in a Greater St. Helens 3A League match at Longview Memorial Stadium.
The Lumberjacks (5-9 league) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first 10 minutes when Chris Holway scored on an assist from Jonny Gordian. But the Chieftains took over from there, using a physical style of play to get back in the game, RAL coach John Bates said.
"After we scored, they pulled out their bag of cheap tricks. I guess a team like that doesn't like giving up a goal against us," Bates said. "They started smacking us in the mouth. They busted open the lip of one of our kids and another one of our boys chipped a tooth. I guess the referee isn't inclined to call something like that."
Bates said his Jacks, who trailed 2-1 at halftime, simply "ran out of gas" in the second half.
Jonathan Bates, Adrian Orosco and Will Hillebrand played well defensively for RAL.
P'Makers blank Kelso
CAMAS ---- Greater St. Helens 3A League powerhouse Camas inflicted a 5-0 loss on Kelso Friday.
Taking into account Camas' five straight league titles, an unfamiliar artificial-turf field and boisterous home crowd, Kelso coach Max Anderson wasn't too disappointed.
"It was 3-0 at halftime," he said. "They got in a couple greasy ones right at the end. ... We feel pretty good about the result, all things considered."
