Crawford, Pruitt, Benson lead Columbians

RAINIER ---- Sarah Crawford had seven hits for the day, and Megan Pruitt and Megan Benson turned in strong pitching performances as the Rainier softball team swept Astoria 8-5 and 12-0 in a Cowapa League doubleheader Thursday.
Pruitt was the winning pitcher in the opener and went 2-for-4 at the plate. Crawford (3-for-4), Rachel White (2-for-4, double), Amber Getzlaff (2-for-4) and Benson (2-for-4) also sparked the Rainier offense. McKenzie Mullins played well defensively at shortstop.
Benson struck out six in her second-game victory, getting plenty of support from Crawford (4-for-4, double), Tasha Smith (3-for-4), Angie Yoeman (2-for-4) and Kaylie Mohning (3-for-4).
White, at first base, was the Columbians' top defender in the second game for Rainier (10-6, 4-3 league).
TRACK & FIELD
Ilwaco, Woodland triumph
ILWACO ---- John Hayes won the 1600- (4:46.0) and 3200-meter (10:46.04) races to lift the Ilwaco boys to victory in a four-way meet.
The Fishermen won with 131 points. Wahkiakum was second just two points back, while Castle Rock was third (108) and Woodland fourth (107).
Also for the Fishermen, Josh Gray captured the pole vault (10-6), Garrett Binion claimed the 400 (53.15), the 400 relay of Jordan Williams, Dylan Wirkkala, David Casper and Binion won in 47.39, and the 1600 relay of Williams, Wirkkala, Hayes and Binion also triumphed (3:40.28).
Wahkiakum had plenty of seconds and thirds to pile up its 129 points. Romeo Savant did win two events for the Mules, the high jump (5-8) and triple jump (38-0). Erik Jespersen also won the 800 for Wahkiakum (2:09.89).
Matt Wheeler was Castle Rock's sole winner, soaring 18-5 in the long jump.
Chris Donald, Anton Fair and Kiel Greenleaf led the way for Woodland. Donald won both hurdles races, the 100 (16.9) and 300 (42.9), while Fair claimed the 100 (11.5) and 200 (23.6) sprints. Greenleaf won the shot put (47-8 1/2) and discus (129-1) for the Beavers.
Josh Baker was Woodland's other winner (javelin, 154-2).
On the girls side, Woodland (180) walked away with first place, followed by Ilwaco (141), Castle Rock (87) and Wahkiakum (46).
Woodland's Ashley Hubenthal was a triple-winner in the 100 hurdles (16.1), triple jump (32-4) and high jump (5-0). Bree Cochran also posted wins in the discus (120-5) and javelin (117-5), while Jill Thoeny was tops in the shot put (39-7 1/2), Brittany Vargas won the 1600 (5:57.2) and Brooke Fincken the 300 hurdles (51.6).
Katie Holmes had a huge day for the Lady Fishermen, winning the long jump (15-10), 100 meters (13.30) and 200 (27.18). Erin Knick won the 400 (1:04.38), Michelle Wroble took the 800 (3:02.27), Kari Knutzen cruised to first in the 3200 (13:35.54), and Ilwaco's 1600 relay of Knick, Katie Freese, Julian Guelfi and Tatiana Bullock (4:21.79) was victorious.
Castle Rock's team of Jessica Brassard, Darcy Davidson, Whitney Garbe and Miriam Ayoub won the 400 relay in 53.6 and the 800 relay in 1:55.9.
Wahkiakum had no first-place winners.
Toledo's Wood wins 3
TOUTLE ---- White Pass won the girls side of Toutle Lake's six-team meet with 139.2 points, followed by Toledo (118.2), Vancouver Christian (98.2), White Salmon (67.2), Kalama (58.2) and Toutle Lake (52).
The scoring in the boys half was Vancouver Christian 133.7, Kalama 116.2, Toledo 97.2, White Pass 77.2, White Salmon 71.2 and TL 27.
Danny Wood of Toledo dominated with first places in all three throwing events: 45 feet, 9 1/2 inches in the shot put, 126-4 in the discus and 161-10 in the javelin. Cord Price won the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 10.40 seconds, and the Indians' team of Justin McCullen, Chad Dupic, Price and Ronny Jones won the 1600 relay in 3:47.03.
The Toledo girls also won their 1600 relay, with Rosa Anderson, Pia Hays, Katie Martin and Amy Layton turning in a 4:41.63. Layton also won the 1600 in 5:38.68 and the 800 in 2:36.83, and Brittnie Baker took the high jump in 4-10.
For Kalama, Trevor Wren (long jump, 21-7), James Castle (high jump, 5-8), David Worthington (200, 23.93), Janice Morrow (javelin, 118.3) and Amber Wrider (400, 1:06.59) won their events.
Toutle Lake had one winner in the boys meet, Trevyn DeLapp (400, 51.87), and one in the girls, Jinni Veys (3200, 13:02.45).
Columbians split duals
RAINIER ---- Rainier won half of a Cowapa League double-dual against Tillamook and Astoria. The Columbian girls beat Tillamook 74-67 and lost to Astoria 76-61, and the boys beat Tillamook 88-43 and lost to the Fishermen 110-34.
"The girls went to Tillamook two weeks ago and we lost by about 25 points ... so that was really a good accomplishment," Rainier coach Brad Pinkstaff said.
For the girls, Amber Samples won the 800 in 2:28.61 against both teams. Other double-winners were Erika Burnett (200, 27.66), Leanna Nagunst (javelin, 112-6 1/2) and the 400 relay of Burnett, Samples, Lisa Schiedler and Beth Smith (52.12).
Against Astoria, Anne Rinck won the 1500 in 5:52 and Leighann Sanders won the high hurdles in 17.87. Nagunst won the shot put (34-1) and discus (88-5) versus Tillamook, and Stephanie Erdman took the high jump in 4-8.
The boys winners against Astoria were Caleb Falconer (400, 53.97 and triple jump, 39-4) and Ben Greer (long jump, 18-3 1/2). Sam Bledsoe (1500, 4:41.29 and 3000, 10:41.30), Jeff Bryant (javelin, 122-11 and discus, 115-7), Matt Roose (100, 11.77), Joel Christopherson (high hurdles, 17.88), Devin Wolf (800, 2:12.65), Greer (200, 24.13) and Chris Ware (high jump, 5-10) all contributed wins toward Rainier's defeat of Tillamook.
GIRLS TENNIS
River blanks Lassies
Sarah Womack, Kelso's No. 1 singles player, gave Columbia River standout Erin Skardon all she could handle before losing a 90-minute match 6-1, 6-1 in the Lassies' 5-0 loss to the powerful Chieftains in GSHL 3A action Thursday at the KHS courts.
"It was probably the best match of Sarah's life, because she really played well against a girl who was third in the state in singles last year," Kelso assistant coach Mike Skeie said. "Overall, we won seven or eight games, which is an accomplishment in itself against Columbia River."
Monarchs win easily
WASHOUGAL ---- Rachel Burns (6-0, 6-0), Lindsay Lucas (6-1, 6-1) and Shannon Prichard (6-2, 6-3) won their singles matches with relative ease as Mark Morris breezed to a 4-1 victory over Washougal in a GSHL 3A match Thursday.
The team of Amanda Millard and Erin Murphy also won their doubles match 6-3, 6-2 for the Monarchs (10-3, 5-2 league), who host R.A. Long today.
Rock falls to Tenino
CASTLE ROCK ---- April Kramer was Castle Rock's standout singles winner in the Rockets' 3-2 loss to Tenino on Thursday in an SWW 2A match.
"She's been our steady one for us," CR coach Jay McIntosh said of Kramer. "It was a real close match, actually."
Castle Rock played three tiebreakers. Kramer won the second singles match 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, and Autumn Knapp won third singles 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
The Rockets (5-2 league) don't have much chance to rest. They face White Salmon today.
Jills flex some muscle
R.A. Long stomped Camas 5-0 on Thursday in a GSHL 3A matchup at the RAL courts.
Megan Morris won the first singles match 6-7 (7-5), 6-2, 6-1. It was the second time this week she had faced Camas' Molly Sein, and the second time the two were the first on the court and the last off it in hot weather. And it was the second time Morris left with a three-set win over Sein.
Amy Higginson (6-1, 6-3), Alex Akhavan (6-4, 6-1), the team of Leslie Jensen and Sandra Keov (6-1, 6-4), and the team of Libby Harvey and Ashley Danielson (6-3, 6-1) all had parts in RAL's victory.

Baseball
Mark Morris 7-4, Washougal 6-0 -- In the first game, Ryan Jodrey drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Monarchs, and finished 3-for-4 with a double at the plate. Cody Graves was 2-for-2 and scored twice, and Skylar LaFrenz had two RBIs. In the nightcap, John Ferguson and (first five innings) and Graves (final two innings) combined on a no-hitter for MM. They allowed only two baserunners on a walk and hit-by-pitch. Zach Waldher had two doubles and two RBIs, and LaFrenz also doubled.
Castle Rock 15, White Salmon 1 -- Anthony Knudsen hit a three-run homer, and Mike Smith got a pair of hits.
Girls tennis
Columbia River 5, Kelso 0 -- Samia El Omari of Kelso dropped a tough 8-6 decision, and the doubles team of Jana Kadlubiakova and Mercedes Pederson played well in a 9-7 setback.
Mark Morris 5, Washougal 0 -- Imogene Mankin (8-1), Kensi Wolgamott (8-2), Chelsea Ashcraft (8-0), and the doubles teams of Erin Anneberg-Dani Fortner (8-0) and Megan Rhodes-Brittany Cotterell (8-0) all won for MM.
Camas 3, R.A. Long 2 -- Rady Keo won her singles match 9-8 (7-1), and the doubles team of Madeline Morris and Nadia Nguyen also won for the Jills.
