TOUTLE ---- Toutle Lake remained undefeated in the Southwest Washington 1A League Southern Division baseball race with a 5-4, eight-inning victory over Toledo on Monday.

The Ducks (3-2, 3-0 league) scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth when Layne Higgins singled, stole second and trotted home on a throwing error by the Toledo catcher.

"Layne was trying to steal third and I think the (Toledo) third baseman lost the throw in the sun, because it was right in his eyes at that point," Toutle coach Casey Feroglia said.

Toledo took a 4-3 lead with three runs in the top of the sixth. Bryan Bakotich singled and came home on Keldy Winters' two-run homer. Jason Boettner made it back-to-back blasts for the Indians with another homer off Ducks starter Tyler Adams (nine strikeouts, one walk).

But Toutle Lake rallied in its half of the sixth to tie it. Ty Bigbee singled, went to second on a sacrifice and scored on pinch-hitter Cody Morain's base hit up the middle.

Matt Hanna (one hit, no runs, no walks) pitched the seventh and eighth innings to earn the win.

Clatskanie beats ranked Knappa

CLATSKANIE, Ore. ---- Clatskanie scored a 10-9 win Monday over Knappa, ranked No. 8 in the state, after falling behind 7-2 at the end of two innings. The Tigers scored four in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead, with Brandon Mollenhour walking in the game-winner.

Miles Johnson pitched the win, throwing six innings, and scored twice, and Sean Doyle threw the seventh for the save.

Ryan Taylor went 3-for-4 with five RBIs, helped out by his second home run of the season, and Kyle Sloderbeck, Max Byrum, and Brandon Hill all played well for the 7-1 Tigers.

SOFTBALL

Tigers hammer Loggers

CLATSKANIE, Ore. ---- Clatskanie stomped Knappa 11-0 in six innings, rebounding from an 0-4 start to win its Northwest 2A League opener.

Right fielder Jessica Meadows was a key defender, especially with a throw home that shut down a Knappa rally with the bases loaded. Courtney Sherman pitched the win, giving up four hits and four walks, and Tracy Somes and Savannah White were the Tigers' leading hitters.

On Saturday, Clatskanie dropped both ends of a doubleheader 9-6 and 2-0 to the Madras White Buffaloes in a nonleague matchup.

Clatskanie had seven errors that led to six unearned runs in the opener. Somes had two hits and Sherman chipped in a double for the Tigers.

Clatskanie managed four hits in the nightcap as White, Tanya Gutierrez and Natalie True all hit singles.

Toutle wins a thriller

TOLEDO ---- Kim Seals drove in Allisha Falk with the winning run in the 10th inning as Toutle Lake slipped past Toledo 6-5 in a Southwest Washington 1A League Southern Division game.

With the International Tiebreaker in effect (runner at second to start the inning), Seals ripped a single and Allisha Falk came around to score, sliding around the Indians catcher on the back side of the plate. The hit completed a 3-for-5, two-RBI day for Seals.

The pair teamed up for a Toutle Lake run in the first inning, with Falk hitting a triple and Seals driving her in with a single. In the third, Jessi Hanna had a two-run triple for the Ducks (3-0), Falk added an RBI double and Lacey Flatz drove in a run with a single to make it 5-0.

Toledo scored four in the four in the sixth and another in the seventh to tie it, and the teams played two more innings before Seals' winning hit.

Kayla Vickaryous pitched the win, relieving starter Falk (5 1/3 innings, three hits) in the sixth inning.

Anna Dahlman (first base), Flatz (right field) and Keri White (center field) sparked Toutle's defense.

Mandy Wallace (2-for-5, double, triple) led the Toledo attack. Kandis Jarvis hit a leadoff single in the sixth inning to get the Indians' rally started. Beth Holmes and Meggie Abplanalp also singled in the inning.

Tausha Martin had a leadoff single and scored the tying run in the seventh for the Indians (4-4, 1-2 league).

Monarchs win again

Tasia Trochim's pitching and a good defensive effort behind her lifted Mark Morris to a 3-0 nonleague win over Elma.

Trochim pitched all seven innings and allowed just one hit with 13 strikeouts. Twice, the Monarch defense forced Elma to strand its runners with the bases loaded, and Katie Hellenberg in right field did particularly well.

Kelsey Hamer (3-for-3, triple), Leslie Wellman (2-for-2, RBI) and Kelly Stratton (2-for-3) were the top hitters for the Monarchs (6-1).

Mules fall to Napavine

CATHLAMET ---- Wahkiakum lost to Napavine 5-1, an improvement from last year's 15-3 pounding.

Angelina Cummings doubled in Arin Cothren in the fourth inning for the Mules' only run, and Charlotte Brown had a single later on. Rachel Fudge went the distance on the mound.

Panthers edge Rockets

WASHOUGAL ---- Castle Rock lost to Class 3A Washougal 6-3 in a nonleague contest after going into the sixth inning with a 1-1 tie.

Brittany Mathews hit a solo homer in the first inning, but Washougal went on a rampage in the sixth, getting several base hits on CR's starting pitcher, Kristi Hope. Kiley Stone relieved her and stopped the bleeding, but the Panthers were already up 6-1, and CR's counter-attack in the top of the seventh fell short.

"Washougal's a 3A team, and we played with them," CR coach Jim Van Fleet said. "We felt OK about the game. Kids are playing hard."

Freshman Brittany Hollings went 1-for-1 with a run scored in her first varsity game, and Stacey Fleming hit a double and played solid defense. Mathews had two diving catches in the outfield as well as the homer.

GIRLS TENNIS

Lassies come up short

Kelso battled Evergreen without several of its top players and fell 3-2 in a nonleague match.

Sarah Womack cruised 6-0, 6-0 at first singles for the Lassies (1-3), and the first doubles duo of Carol Gerkins and Ericka Olson prevailed 6-4, 6-3.

"It was our match to win," said Kelso coach Pat Berg. "We were missing some varsity bodies, and that changed the look of the whole match."

MM blanks Skyview

Rachel Burns (6-0, 6-0), Lindsay Lucas (6-3, 6-2) and Shannon Pritchard (6-1, 6-0) were singles winners for Mark Morris as the Monarchs rolled past Skyview 5-0 in a nonleague match.

Doubles winners for MM were Christen Anneberg and Jonelle Davis (6-0, 6-4), and Brittany Cotterell and Megan Rhodes (6-4, 6-1).
