KALAMA -- The Kalama School Board voted Saturday to approve the contract with the Kalama Education Association, but because the board failed to announce the meeting legally, the board will meet again Monday to OK the contract.
The school board met in an executive session Saturday morning to discuss the contract with the Kalama Education Association, which approved the contract Friday. After that special meeting, the School Board called an unannounced public meeting to vote on the agreement.
State law requires that the board announce meetings at least 24 hours before holding a vote.
"We forgot the technical details," District Superintendent Jim Sutton said Saturday. "The problem is that we don't do this very often."
Contract negotiations have been rocky. The teachers' union declared an impasse, threatened to strike without a contract and filed an unfair labor practice complaint against the district. The union has dropped the official complaint against the district since the approval of the contract.
The Kalama School Board will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the District Office to approve the contract.
