Jails and wages
In response to your editorials concerning jails (Aug. 17) and Washington state becoming a right-to-work state (Aug. 15), you can cancel my subscription to The Daily News.
Jails are not the answer. Of course, you will have more people to put in your jail once everyone makes minimum wage and you have no middle-income workers to pay the taxes we need to pay for schools and basic services.

'Moral' defined
In regard to Jennifer Conner's Aug. 16 letter, Webster's dictionary states that truth is an established fact. It also states that moral means able to distinguish between right and wrong conduct.
I believe Michael Stone's Aug. 13 commentary was based on biblical facts. Conner thinks the truth calls for being tolerant of others. Webster's dictionary states tolerate means to allow or permit.
I, myself, am a Christian, so I'll go back to what Webster's says about moral --- able to distinguish between right and wrong.

About same sex couples
I thought that the major religions try to teach us to be nice to each other. Is religion teaching us to be exclusionary? Sad.

Honor our heroes
Sept. 11 has become the day to commemorate the fallen and the heroes of the attacks on New York's twin towers and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Since that day in 2001, we have learned much. Our liberty and our heroes have been, and are being, defined.
We have learned that security in a free society is not secure. Liberty is maintained by restricting some freedom. If all freedom is to be allowed, then we cannot expect to have secure liberty. Liberty is maintained by responsible freedom.
Hero material is in everyone and manifests itself by action when the need arises. Our military, police and fire forces are heroes just for making themselves available, knowing the dangers they may face. Fortunately, only some will have their fortitude tested. Many civilians who survived, and some who did not, showed us bravery by acting upon the needs at hand.
Sept. 11, 2001, is a day that will be remembered for the loss of that day and to honor the heroes of our society. Those who have sacrificed and those who still live proving our American resolve. We give our gratitude to all of our American heroes.
