For local income tax filers, the key numbers today are 6 p.m. and 4868.
If you can't get your tax forms to the Longview Post Office by 6 p.m. to obtain the April 15 postmark, you'll want to get IRS Form 4868, which gives an automatic extension until August 15. That form is available at area post offices, libraries, and on the internet at www.irs.gov.
Note: the Longview Post Office closes at 5 p.m., so taxpayers needing the services of a clerk will need to arrive before then. Mail deposited in the Post Office drop box at the building by 6 p.m. will get an April 15 postmark.
For Washington residents, there's a new address to mail returns this year. Make sure they go to the Internal Revenue Service in Fresno, Calif. Oregon residents' returns will go there as well, just as they did last year. Best bet: Use the pre-printed label that comes with the tax forms if you've filed before.
Also of heightened interest this year is the "Combat Zone" extension. Members of the military serving in the Iraq area can get an automatic extension not only for filing, but also for auditing or collection matters. Simply writing "Combat Zone" on any notices from the IRS will suspend the action. The issuance of notices also can be prevented if they or their family members contact the IRS to tell them of their status.
