A 30-year-old Longview woman died of injuries she suffered in a head-on collision east of Clatskanie Wednesday, the same day her fiance hoped to present her with an engagement ring.

Ngoc Nguyen died at 5:52 p.m. Wednesday of internal injuries at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland.

At 6 a.m. Wednesday, Nguyen was on her way to pick up her fiance, Jeremy Burnett of Clatskanie, on her way to work at Georgia-Pacific at Wauna.

Both worked for Georgia-Pacific, where Nguyen was an accountant.

A 1995 Dodge Ram pickup towing a 1998 Ford full-size pickup driven by Jeffrey Leitz of Milwaukie was eastbound on Highway 30 when it crossed the centerline about two miles east of Clatskanie and struck Nguyen's 1999 Isuzu Trooper head-on.

A co-worker, Gary Ross of Longview, saw the collision and assisted Nguyen, said Jerri Weyer of Longview, a long-time family friend. Nguyen was taken to St. John Medical Center and then transferred to Oregon Health Sciences University.

Nguyen was born in Vietnam and came to Longview with her family in 1975. She attended Longview schools, graduating from Mark Morris in 1988. She earned a bachelor's degree in International Business from Central Washington University in 1993.

She and Burnett were planning to marry in September and had an engagement party set for May 20, Weyer said.

The driver of the pickup was transported to St. John Hospital for treatment of injuries and released.

Oregon State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings said the accident remains under investigation. No evidence of alcohol or other intoxicants was evident, he said.
